Birthday DIY afternoon tea at the Larderhouse

Larderhouse, Southbourne

To celebrate Mike’s Mum Frances’ birthday earlier in October, Mike arranged afternoon tea at the Larderhouse in Southbourne. I came straight from my dressmaking course which was just around the corner so arrived first and took some photos whilst I waited. The restaurant was decorated with lots of autumnal pumpkins, corn, and flowers.

Mike and Frances arrived not long afterwards and we sat at our table to decide what to order. We only found out once we had sat down they didn’t ‘officially’ serve afternoon tea but as we had been looking forward to sandwiches, tea and cake we decided to make our own version up from the menu.

We ordered a  platter of various meats, cheese, chutneys and flatbreads, a ham hock sandwich with home made pickles to share and each went for a different tea to try.  They had lots of different teas to pick from and also a long list of coffees. You can have the coffees served at your table through what looks like strange looking science equipment, you can see one in the corner of the below photo. Unfortunately they only serve them in the evenings (an excuse to go back!).

We all dived in straight away when the food arrived and I forgot to take photos first…. again! Everything was d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. If you are anywhere as much as a cheese lover as me and you live nearby I recommend you make a visit now!

Although the platter and sandwich left us pretty full, we of course found space for desert and each ordered a different one to try. Chocolate brownie for me, almond and plum tart for Frances (my favourite of the three) and a lemon curd Eton mess for Mike.

When Frances got up from the table Mike quickly asked the staff if they could add a candle to Frances’ desert which they happily did.

Happy Birthday to yooou!

Happy Birthday Frances!

Now to plan another visit to try more of their cheeses and sample the huge wine menu!
